Another four years later comment, methinks, but why not. Having been born in the same year as David's "home year" of 1978, this movie among several from the 80's holds a permanent place in my heart. Much like classic rock, movies like this just don't seem to be made anymore. Everything is too PC nowadays.

Anyway, getting back on the core topic, it seems like the rendition of the ship in the upper left side kinda looks like a metallic brain...perhaps an unintended coincidence regarding Max's need for David's "inferior brain" housing the star charts and everything else he filled it up with. The movie's soundtrack, having just listened to it a few days ago for nostalgia now keeps playing over and over in my head, sometimes without me intending to.

The idea of a ship that can "go at any speed" including the speed of light, yet still be fragile enough to require careful "navigating" around things like cables on a certain well known bridge really balances the ship out. It's an ideal means of escaping the confines of a homely existence to be able to travel essentially anywhere in the galaxy or the universe itself. There were things I never grasped as a kid when this came out (I was 8 at the time), such as the principle of time dilation that increases as you approach the speed of light, hence why David didn't age in the 8 year gap he was away.

Bottom line, FotN was a classic IMO and it's great to meet the man (online anyway) who designed the memorable spacecraft that took David around the world and through time and space. It's nice to see these alternate design concepts and I bet if movie tech were a bit more efficient, I bet one of these designs may have been used instead. Thanks again for your contribution to such a great movie of its time!
